Make Long Distance Dating Work For You

More and more couples are entering in to long distance relationships. Career changes, online dating etc are all factors in the wise. And just because you don’t live in the same town, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a healthy, happy relationship.

So here are some tips to help make long distance dating work for you…

Make Time: Regardless of what kind of relationship you’re in, if you want it to work then you have to make time for each other and long distance is no excuse. Set time aside daily to connect with each other, whether it’s via Skype or phone you need to be able to talk. A quick text each day to let them know you’re thinking about them is also a good idea.

Schedule regular visits: Arrange regular visits so that you’ve always got something to look forward too and you keep the spark going. Always make sure that you take it in turns to visit each other because you don’t want resentment to build up.

Have a goal in mind: Think about the future. How long are you going to be apart? What’s the time scale for the long distance relationship. The fact is that no couple can stay in a long distance relationship forever, there has to be an end goal because eventually, we all want to settle down. So make a plan and work towards achieving it.

Be reasonable: If you think that long distance relationships are easy then think again. They are seriously hard work. So be realistic and keep your mind on the future and how once you get over this hard work you’ll be together.

Understand that your other half has to have a life: Because you’re not with each other every day you’re not always going to know what’s going on. If they’re late home, forget to text or can’t make that video chat then understand that things come up and they have a life to lead too.

You may want to set a few ground rules though: Ensure you know what the level of commitment is between you both. You don’t want to be taken by surprise when one party starts going out on dates!

Do things together: Just because you’re apart it doesn’t mean that you can’t do things together. Even things like watching the same tv show or cooking dinner whilst you’re on Skype can help.

And remember to always stay honest: If your feelings change or maybe you’re feeling insecure or jealous then it’s really important to stay honest with your partner.
