Do you have FOBU?
Move over FOMO, there’s a new syndrome in town and this time it’s FOBU aka The Fear Of Breaking Up.
FOBU is a common relationship dilemma caused when someone in a miserable, dead-end relationship becomes more afraid of the projected pain and inconvenience of a breakup than they are of the actual, often greater, pain of staying in an unsatisfying relationship.
Listen, we’ve ALL been there. It’s usually easier to stay with the devil you know but who wants easier? Here are three signs that you have FOBU…
You fight – EVERY DAY. If you’re constantly fighting with your partner and yet you’re still with each other then it’s time to start asking yourself WHY?
Despite being unhappy – you think this is the only person for you. Do you think there’s no point in leaving your current partner because you think that no one else will put up with your little foibles? Or if the thought of getting back in the dating game strikes fear in to you? You have FOBU!
You dream about ending your relationship. If you rehearse your break up talk or you start thinking about all those things you can do as a single lady then it’s probably time that you need to get out of the relationship. The longer it goes on, the worse it’ll get.
So what can you do to get over FOBU? I’m afraid the only answer is that you need to (wo)man up! It’s not fair on either of you to be in a relationship that’s not 100% so bite the bullet, realise that you’re both going to be happier in the long run and end things. Life is way too short to spend your life with someone who doesn’t push all the right buttons.
Do you have FOBU or do you know someone who does? What advice would you give?
