Breaking up in the digital age
Breaking up in the digital age is not easy. Breaking up before the era of text messages, facebook, instagram and the like was a lot simpler. You could stay out of your ex’s way until your heart had mended and you’d got yourself (and your life) back together again.
However, with the rise of social media and technology, untangling relationships has become way more complicated. For a start, there’s no getting away. You no longer can shove that box of old photos and memories under the bed and forget it, you’ve now got digital photos across your variety of devices. Not to mention apps like time hop which throw random events back in your face.
Facebook poses a particularly troubling obstacle because it stops you from moving forward since seeing an ex-partner on Facebook conjures up old wounds or leaves pangs of jealousy because partners moved on.
There is also the problem of whether or not to unfriend ex-partners and their friends or family. If the choice is to unfriend an ex, the next natural question is how many mutual friends should be included.
It’s complicated! How have you coped with a a breakup in the facebook age?
