Dating tips from the 1950’s
So apparently, dating has always been a bit of a minefield. But if you think that dating is difficult now, spare a thought for single women in the 50’s. We’ve stumbled across an article from an edition Woman’s Own in October 1950 which gives dating tips for ladies going on a dinner date.
And let us tell you, it’s baffling. The article which is titled “how to eat in a restaurant” (just incase ladies didn’t know) gives dating tips that reflect the conservative way back the.
Here are just a few of the tips…
“Never ask the waiter for anything yourself.” – apparently the man – whether it’s a date, husband, father or brother – should always do the ordering. The only exception is if you were to drop a knife, then you are allowed to ask the waiter for a new one.
Also women are advised to think carefully about any fruit that they may order with the likes of apple and bananas likely to “cause some embarrassment.”
And whilst we’re talking fruit, if you ever wondered how to properly eat a cherry then fear not – this article provided the answer. “Cherries should be put in the mouth whole with the stones carefully placed on a spoon.” Other large fruit such as plums “should be dissected in the dish and the stones placed at the side.”
Another thing that women should avoid is tipping your soup plate towards you when you eat. This ladies, is the height of bad manners.
And it’s not just what you eat that is looked at. Make up is also an area where women needed guidance: ”Women should be very careful not to leave lipstick marks on napkins and cups; this is in bad taste.”
Luckily times have changed and dating (not to mention living) is way more relaxed. What tips would you like to see make a return…
