1. “What are you having?”
Deep within most men are two warring factions. On one side, he’ll have the urge to provide. He’ll want to demonstrate his wealth and capability. Don’t even reach for your purse, this round’s on him. And on the other side? He has his love of free beer!
So when you offer to buy him a drink, well, that’ll be music to his ears.
2. “Tell me about your job”
First dates are notorious for small talk and awkward silences. If you need to coax him out of his shell in the beginning, ask him what he does for a living. If he’s working in a field he enjoys, he’ll take great pride in telling you all about it. And if not? He’ll appreciate the opportunity for a bit of a moan.
Asking about his job also takes the pressure off him in the conversation stakes, and gives you the chance to ask follow up questions to get him to relax and open up.
3. “My favourite place in the world is…”
Another sure fire way to spark interesting and animated discussion is to share your travel stories. It’s a great opportunity to bond over similar interests and destinations, and once again gives you both a chance to settle into a nice conversational rhythm.
If you want to guide things, talk about your favourite place, and then ask him his. When he opens up, follow up with a few well-placed “why?” questions to keep him talking. Generally speaking, we all love talking about ourselves, regardless of gender – and if you listen intently you’ll probably make him feel good about himself (and the date) in the process.
4. “I LOVE that too!”
If he mentions something that he loves – be it a movie, book, song, whatever – and you love it too, don’t be coy, tell him. After all, first dates are about little moments of connection, and discovering shared interests is a great starting point for a blossoming relationship.
Just make sure you’re not dismissive about his interests. Nothing will kill the mood quicker than a rogue eye roll!
5. One of your jokes!
A good sense of humour is often cited as a desirable trait in men, but it’s also something men look for in women. If you can make him laugh, you’re probably on to a winner!
