How To Get Out Of A Bad Date

It’s a position we’ve all been in. Sat opposite someone and desperately thinking about a way to leave after the conversation has run dry. And has been dry for the last 30 minutes.

Here are a few fail-safe tips on getting out of the date from hell without coming across heartless and hurting too many feelings.

Avoid Cliches

When you’re trying to think of something on the hop it usually ends up in a cliche. Things like “my friend has been in an accident” or “my cat has just died” really won’t cut the mustard. They sound like you’ve just made them up (especially as you have and earlier on in the conversation you may have said you don’t even like cats). If you’re absolutely desperate to leave then you’re better off telling him you’ve got a headache coming on or you’ve got an early meeting or alternatively you could just be honest.

Plan Ahead

There is no substitute for proper planning. When you’re arranging to meet then tell him before hand that you’re leaving at a certain time because you’ve something else on. That way you’ve given yourself a dedicated time and there’s no need for awkwardness when you’re ready to leave. If you’re really enjoying spending time with him then you can easily say that you’ve changed your plans or just leave the date on a high and arrange to meet again soon.

Get a friend to call

OK so this is a cliche but it’s an effective one. By getting a friend to call 45 minutes in to the date then you’re giving yourself a great excuse to get out. However, make sure you tell him something plausible like their car has broken down or they need an emergency babysitter.

Blame work

Now you have to think about what job you do but if you can claim that you’re on call then you’ve got the perfect excuse to dash away.
