Bluffers Guide to Cocktails – St Patrick’s Day

st patricks day cocktails

The next instalment of our Bluffers Guide to Cocktails takes on that special green day on 17th March – St Patrick’s Day!

That religious holiday that allows us to get drunk and make a fool of ourselves on a weekday.

For those of you needing a reminder of what it’s all about apart from an excuse to wear green and hit the pub, St Patrick established churches and monasteries around Ireland for 30 years until his death on 17th March 461 A.D.

Ever since, the Irish have been celebrating this saint for converting pagans to Christianity and driving away evil from the green shores of Ireland. Shamrocks and green clothing have been the celebratory tradition because St Patrick is said to have used the Shamrock (a three-leaved plant) to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

While the traditional way to proclaim your proud Irish heritage, or proud “Irish for a day” heritage, is with a pint of Guinness, here at Urbansocial, we’ve sourced some alternative cocktails for you to mix things up a little!

1) Emerald Isle
Ingredient: 1 part Gin, 1 tsp Green Crème de menthe, 2 dashes bitters

Pour all ingredients into an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake well before straining into a chilled martini glass and enjoy.

2) Everybody’s Irish
Ingredients: 2 oz Irish Whisky, 1 tbsp green crème de menthe, 1 tbsp Green Chatreuse, green olive

Pour all ingredients into an ice filled cocktail shaker, and shake well before straining and serving into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a green olive and enjoy.

3) Gold Emerald Shot
Ingredients: half oz vodka, half oz Goldshlager, half oz Midori

Fill an ice filled cocktail shaker with all 3 ingredients, and shake until it’s thoroughly chilled before serving into a shot glass. Down the hatch!

4) The Brotherhood
Ingredients: 1.5 oz Irish Whisky, ¾ oz Grand Marnier, ¾ oz Bénédictine, ¾ oz fresh lemon juice, lemon peel

Add all the ingredients to an ice filled shaker, and shake well before straining into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Twist the lemon peel and drop into the drink to garnish.

And…. You can’t finish off your Paddy’s day celebrations without one of these for the road!

5) Irish Coffee
Ingredients: 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 part Irish Whisky, 2 parts hot strong coffee, lightly whipped cream

Add the sugar into a stemmed glass, followed by the whisky and hot coffee up to the top, leaving about 1cam from the brim. Stir well to ensure the sugar has dissolved. Over the back of a spoon add lightly whipped cream to the top of the coffee so that it floats on top. Enjoy!

Share your experiences of St Patricks Day shenanigans! We want to hear your stories, but keep it clean please!
