First up, to round off the week and the month of February is National Kahlúa Day on Friday 27th February.

Kahlúa is a coffee-flavored rum-based liqueur from Mexico that dates back to 1936, when Pedro Domecq started producing it. It was named Kahlúa, meaning “House of the Acolhua people” in the Veracruz Nahuatl language spoken before the Spanish Conquest. At 20% ABV, it’s best known for being used in coffee liquers, and popular cocktails such as theh B52.

Here’s our Top 3 Kahlúa recipes for you to try this weekend!

1) Expresso Martini– Pick Me Up Martini
Ingredients: 1 part Kahlúa, 2 parts Vodka, 1 part Expresso.

Apparently created in 1984 when a top model walked into a London bar and asked for a drink that would wake her up and **** her up. You’ll need a shaker and an Expresso machine for this. It’s simply a case of mixing booze with coffee. Shake the Kahlúa, Vodka and espresso together with lots of ice for around 10 seconds, then strain into a cocktail glass and serve!

2) Kahlúa Sour – The Unusual Couple
Ingredients: 2.5 parts Kahlúa, juice of 1 lemon, half part simple syrup (50% sugar, 50% water dissolved together), 1 part egg white.

It sounds like an unlikely pairing, but it works! Pour all ingredients into a shaker and shake for 10 seconds. Then add a big scoop of ice and shake again before straining into a Martini glass. Enjoy!

3) B52– The Layered Shot
Ingredients: Equal parts Kahlúa, Irish cream liqueur and Cointreau

Always a visual winner, the name refers to the band The B-52’s, whose name comes from the US B-52 Stratofortress long-range bomber. To make this iconic shot, simply layer the three ingredients into a chilled shot glass, pouring them over the back of a spoon. Start with the Kahlúa, followed by the Irish Cream, and topping off with Cointreau. Usually down the hatch in one.

Happy Kahlúa Day! Let us know how you get on!
